Fire Suppression Controls and extinguishes fires, operates nozzles and hose lines, connects to and operates fire hydrants, forcible entries, ventilates structures, and uses ground ladders Uses a variety of hand tools, hydraulic tools and portable fire extinguishers Combats fires in building structures, brush and wooded areas Provides stand-by for hazardous operations such as confined space entry, helicopter landings and liquid oxygen deliveries Performs rescues from hazardous permit-required confined spaces, bodies of water and rescue from hazardous materials spills, below grade rescues as well as rescue from fire Operates fire extinguishing equipment carried on the apparatus such as foam and dry chemical extinguishing agents Advance Cardiac Life Support Conducts systematic physical examination of the patient's condition and determines treatment method Completes invasive procedures such as endotracheal intubation and intravenous therapy Determines blood pressure readings to be used in conjunction with a variety of symptoms to identify the nature of shock Performs electrocardiology procedures including taking and interpreting electrocardiograms (EKG), performing manual defibrillation, providing transcutaneous external pacing Administers medications and solutions orally or intravenously under standing orders (Protocols) or under direction of a physician Documents drugs administered and provides information to the hospital or medical provider; observes and documents the effects of drugs administered Recognizes and determines the causes and medical implications of closed and open soft tissue injuries and treats appropriately Recognizes fractures, dislocations, and sprains, and takes steps to immobilize the patient for transport Uses and maintains emergency care equipment such as specialized kits and bags, backboards, suction devices, splints, stretchers, oxygen delivery systems, and monitoring equipment Ensures proper disposal of biohazard materials Replaces used intravenous needles and solutions, lines, blankets, and other expendable supplies Reports in a clear, concise manner, orally or in writing, what injuries were identified and what patient care was administered at the emergency scene and in transit Fire Inspector Performs fire inspection duties in areas where hazards are expected to be encountered; inspects medical facilities, multiple story administrative buildings, public assemblies, industrial shops, warehouses and residential quarters for fire safety violations and other conditions contributing to more extensive fire hazards Performs pre-incident planning by familiarizing themselves with the various buildings interiors and to locate any possible hazards as well as established fire protection systems Conducts inspections on built-in fire protection features such as fire barriers, smoke barriers and fire doors Conducts inspections, testing and maintenance (ITM) on fire detection and suppression systems Conducts fire prevention training to staff including fire drills, fire safety measures, and Fire Prevention Week activities Hazardous Materials Control Member of the Medical Center Hazardous Materials Response Team Responds to incidents including accidents occurring in VA buildings and grounds, motor vehicle accidents, train derailments or industrial accidents Employs hazard and risk assessment techniques to complete incident analysis Collects and interprets hazard and response information from transportation emergency information centers, shipper and/or manufacturer contacts, printed and online data sources, technical resources, and monitoring equipment Determines the extent of damage to containers, predicts the likely behavior of the released materials, estimates the size of the endangered area, identifies institutions or groups requiring special care or evacuation assistance Develops strategy for approaching the release site and containing the release; implements the response by performing advanced mitigation, control and confinement operations within the capabilities of the available resources and personal protective equipment Prepares incident reports and documentation Maintains and decontaminates hazardous materials response equipment and supplies Trains employees assigned to the Medical Center Decontamination Team in the proper use of the decontamination and personal protective equipment as well as the proper techniques in decontaminating personnel and equipment Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade, GS-07, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience typically include, but are not limited to:
controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; rescue operations; detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; operating fire communications equipment; controlling hazardous materials incidents; developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. The Firefighter (Intermediate Life Support) is subject to hazardous duty, potentially imminent danger situations, and must maintain a good physical condition. The work requires regular and recurring above average physical exertions due to inspections, surveys, fire suppression activities and emergency services. You must be able to crawl, walk, run, climb stairs, climb ladders, manipulate specialized fire related equipment, work at heights of 40
feet, carry heavy loads and wear specialized fire and chemically protective personal protective equipment. You must be able to maintain fitness standards in accordance with Firefighter physicals that are conducted annually. You must pass a fitness for duty physical. This physical will include examinations for both firefighter and hazardous materials response. The medical examination will include a history relating to the handling and exposure to hazardous materials and your ability to wear any required personal protective equipment including respirators, under conditions including temperature extremes that may be expected at the work site. You must maintain physical condition to don personal protective equipment consisting of:
coat, helmet, boots, gloves, bunker pants and self-contained breathing apparatus, which weighs 75 pounds. You must wear this equipment when responding to and during all emergency calls (excluding ambulance) regardless of temperature. You will be expected to enter buildings and atmospheres that are unsafe due to fire, oxygen deficiencies, etc. and perform very strenuous work carrying heavy equipment and victims. The requirements of the job are such that you must maintain alertness, self-control, and emotional stability when working under conditions of stress, confusion, panic and where physical injury or death are present. Age Requirement/Maximum Entry Age:
This is a primary position covered by enhanced retirement provisions that stipulate mandatory retirement at age 57 after 20 years of service. Applicants must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position. An exception is allowed if an applicant has prior Federal service in a primary covered position sufficient to complete 20 years of service on or before the mandatory retirement age of 57. Requirements for Motor Vehicle Operation:
For positions requiring employees to drive motorized firefighting equipment, candidates must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator's license of the appropriate classification and kind. Selective Factors:
