Physician - Ophthalmologist - Section Chief

The Ophthalmologist is primarily responsible for providing Ophthalmology care to Veterans both clinically and surgically to a high population of cataract, glaucoma, retinal disease and diabetic patients. The Ophthalmologist will specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical diseases and conditions of the eye, its related structures, and visual pathways. Examine and treat patients functioning as a comprehensive ophthalmologist clinically and surgically and determine the need for surgical or non-surgical treatment of routine, urgent or emergent patients. Perform surgical procedures related to injuries and diseases of the eye and visual system. The physician typically trained to perform surgery, including the use of lasers, on the orbit, extraocular muscles, anterior and posterior segments of the eye, and surrounding structures, as well as intra-ocular injections. Must have the ability to do cataract extractions with lens implantations. Ophthalmologists perform non-medical treatments including prescriptions of lenses and aids for low vision. They provide medical and surgical therapies as well. Perform preoperative evaluations and informed consent for patients. Perform minor and major ophthalmic surgical procedures. Perform surgical procedures related to injuries and diseases of the eye and visual system. Perform intravitreal injections for retinal diseases including exudative age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Perform laser procedures for retinal diseases as well as anterior segment lasers such as PI, YAG, etc. Proficient with ancillary testing including Ocular Coherence Tomography, ultrasound, fluorescein angiography analysis. Ensure appropriate post-operative care and follow-up is conducted on patients. Complete clinical charting and documentation appropriately and in a timely manner. Collaborate with other physician specialists and medical staff in overall treatment of patient's medical conditions. Supervise ophthalmology residents in clinic and in surgery. Work Schedule:

United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. The Physical Requirements of this position are concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and may include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested. The work is usually sedentary, but it requires long periods of walking, standing, bending, or climbing and employee may carry light items such as books, instruments, lap tops and other similar materials. Moderate lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing and reaching above shoulder 1 to 2 hours; Use of fingers, walking and standing 2-8 hours.
