Purpose:
To manage, maintain, and implement the scope of work as it relates to GFP's sustainable gardening program's vision and goals in the school partner gardens network in the eleven-parish service region of The Food Bank of Cenla, and that aligns with the mission of The Food Bank of Cenla.
Scope:
Develops a sustainable garden growing plan for lower elementary schools that coincides with seasonal planting, maintenance, and harvesting, with accompanying monthly reports, and gives ongoing technical support.
Helps create, plan, schedule, and teach lessons at each school.
Helps train and manage volunteers at the demonstration garden and at the schools; schedules and oversees their assistance.
Maintains direct contact with assigned school garden sponsors/liaisons several times a month and provides technical support to them.
Assists other GFP staff members in the maintenance, etc.
of all garden sites.
Responsibilities Implements a seasonal gardening schedule at the partner school gardens assigned and following accepted cultural recommendations for Cenla.
Helps teach sustainable gardening practices to school participants, GFP staff, & volunteers.
Helps manage volunteers, leading & teaching them in organic gardening practices at the demonstration garden and at school sites.
Helps maintain GFP storage facilities, pavilion, chicken coop, irrigation system, motor vehicles used, dump trailer, power tools, & any structures/equipment/tools used by the GFP at The Food Bank & at off-site gardens.
Assists in the daily operations & of the upkeep of the demo garden & FB garden by planting, weeding, watering, mulching, bed-building, harvesting, recording of produce, & disbursement of produce to FB clients or Cenla feeding programs.
Plans and schedules site visits, and workdays at school gardens assigned.
Helps oversee animal husbandry that may be practiced at the GFP demonstration garden or any of the school gardens - including chickens, & red wiggler worms, collecting worm castings for use in the garden.
Maintains support systems such as composting & rainwater collection systems and other pertinent organic garden practices at school gardens.
Helps recycle GFP/Food Bank compostable waste that gets composted or given to GFP chickens.
Attends local, state, and national conferences, workshops, visits similar programs as needed.
Maintains records, contacts, & photos of site visits/workdays at assigned school gardens or other sites.
Maintains monthly contact with school garden sponsors, assessing progress & needs & recording data given.
Participates in GFP Advisory Council meetings.
Helps create & conduct training classes, hands-on learning opportunities, & cooking demos related to sustainable gardening & good nutrition for school gardens participants.
Helps teach and/or create lessons that align with the State of Louisiana elementary science standards that GFP uses in its pilot school programming in Rapides Parish schools and any of the schools within the eleven-parish service region of the Food Bank of Cenla.
Qualifications Associate degree or equivalent work experience.
Minimum of one year's experience working and/or teaching children Experience with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and willingness to learn other computer-based skills Excellent time management and scheduling ability Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as a team Excellent interpersonal, facilitation/presentation and communication skills Experience with vegetable gardening and landscaping, organic experience an asset Positive attitude; engaging personality DISCLAIMER This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee in this position.
